House Appropriators Announce $2B in Job Training Cuts
The House Appropriations Committee announced this morning a partial list of spending cuts that will be included in the upcoming continuing resolution (CR) for Fiscal Year 2011 (the current CR that is funding most government operations will expire on March 4). The single largest cut included on the list is $2 billion in job training funds.
Bill language is not yet available, so we do not know which programs, specifically, will be targeted for cuts and have no additional details about how cuts will be implemented. However, we feel it is important that the workforce field begin working immediately on making the case for how damaging these cuts will be locally, no matter which program(s) are ultimately targeted. Workforce programs served more than 30 million people in 2009, and demand is unlikely to lessen while unemployment remains near record high levels. The need for an adequately funded workforce system has never been more urgent.
National Skills Coalition will continue to monitor these issues as they develop.
